Affording Cataract Surgery at the Eye Clinic of Austin
Cataract removal is seen as a medical necessity since it can cause blindness. This means that the surgery and standard monofocal intraocular lenses (IOL) will be covered by Medicare and most health insurance plans. A monofocal IOL will improve distance vision, but you will need glasses or contacts to see mid-range and up close. They may be needed even for distance vision if astigmatism is not corrected at the time of surgery.
Lenses that are referred to as “Lifestyle Lenses” are also available for this surgical procedure. If you choose to upgrade from a monofocal IOL to a Multifocal, Accommodating, or Toric IOL, you will pay out-of-pocket for the cost of the Lifestyle lens and the additional testing and follow-up care needed. These lenses are not covered by Medicare and insurance companies because they provide vision capabilities beyond the standard lens that is covered.
